High safety standards found in WA construction sites

A WORKSAFE inspection program of construction sites in WA has revealed some areas of concern, but generally good compliance standards.

According to the safety authority, seven construction inspectors conducted 50 investigations in the south-west of WA from 8 to 12 December 2008.

Inspectors issued 26 improvement notices and 15 prohibition notices. They found the safety standards of the construction industry in the region were generally high.

However, the construction sector has been notified of a number of problem areas, including unsafe work practices and breaches in relation to electricity and working at height.

In some local areas, it was difficult to get portable electrical equipment tested and tagged because local electrical contractors were not providing this service.

The second most common problem was to do with the prevention of falls from height.
