Safety bulletin for mine flood recovery
THE Queensland Department of Mines and Energy has released a safety bulletin regarding flood recovery in mines.
This follows recent severe weather in Central Queensland which flooded many mines and disrupted mining operations. According to the department, the bulletin is for all mine operators, site senior executives, contractors and service providers, as they restore operations.
The department reminded personnel that risk management should be undertaken during all recovery efforts, with attention paid to the likelihood of pit wall instability, ingress lubrication of joint fault planes and undercutting.
These phenomena tend to occur when surrounding areas are soaked and ground water tables are recharged.
Due to the eroding effects of flooding, damaged bunds, undercutting, washouts, loss of traction and soft edges are potential hazards during the rebuilding process. Particularly, deteriorated pedestrian conditions pose a risk where vehicles are involved.
In working with water management infrastructure such as pumping, the department reminded workers of the risks associated with working in and around water, especially with mobile equipment. Special risks include water contact with electrical systems and unstable underwater surfaces.
