THE QUEENSLAND Government will start charging mining, quarrying and explosives operations a Safety and Health Levy on 1 October 2008.

According to the government, the fee covers safety and health services provided by the state to the industries.

All operations regulated by the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Explosives Act 1999 will be required to pay the Safety and Health Levy.

Affected companies will also need to supply their employment numbers to the government via the Queensland Mining Quarrying and Explosives Industry Census form.
