QUEENSLAND researchers are developing a simulator to familiarise coal miners with the emergency breathing apparatus they wear in the event of an underground explosion.
The prototype simulator provides a realistic feel of the experience of wearing a self-rescuer.
A self-rescuer is a self-contained, closed-circuit mouthpiece with a breathing apparatus. It is worn as protection against smoke, toxic gases or lack of oxygen.
Coal miners will also experience the heat, humidity and claustrophobia of the situation within the simulation.
The system was developed because training exercises indicated some miners were not completely comfortable wearing self-rescuers. By familiarising staff with the use of the device, the developers hope they will be better able to use them for an extended period of time in a real life emergency.
