Timber mill death at Gippsland

A 35-year-old woman was crushed when a bundled pack of timber weighing about two tonnes fell on her at the Carter Holt Harvey mill at Morwell. According to WorkSafe Victoria, she was removing a blockage when a lifting device jammed.

According to WorkSafe, this brings Victoria’s workplace related death toll to three so far this year. In a statement released today, WorkSafe noted that last January there were five work-related deaths, making the month is one of the worst times of year for workplace fatalities.

WorkSafe says there are nearly 5000 amputations, crushing, serious cuts and other injuries each year involving maintenance work. This type of work also accounts for nearly one-third of deaths. It is currently running a campaign targeting safety work around machines.
