US graduate learns mine safety the Aussie way

A GRADUATE student from the United States will be researching mine safety in Queensland to enhance occupational health and safety expertise for mines.
According to the Queensland Mines Minister, the student placement with the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (Simtars) team will reinforce research into mine safety issues and enforcement.
Jennifer Massie from the University of Michigan will be on site for three months to complete practical work experience as part of an Environmental Health/Industrial Hygiene degree.
The Minister expressed hopes for the placement to strengthen Simtars’ links with the US, and for more graduate students to take up work experience with the mines safety body.
Massie will be undertaking site workplace health and safety management duties, assessing fibrous and mineral dusts, testing and analysing chemicals and gases and carrying out noise measurement.
