Unannounced mine safety audits to rise

THE Queensland government will be increasing the number of unannounced safety audits on mines in the state.

According to statistics from the Queensland Mines Inspectorate, ten mines were audited without warning in 2007, and there were more than 1500 inspections.

The Queensland Mines Minister has warned of severe penalties for companies who ignore audit recommendations. There include fines and prosecutions of various penalties.

The government claims the mines inspectorate has the power to suspend the operations of a mine depending on the findings of the prosecution.
