Union warning on coal mining safety

THE Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has warned Australia’s coal mining industry against complacency when dealing with work safety.

This comes after a man was killed at a Queensland mining plant on 7 March 2008. According to the union, the coal mining industry has not had serious disasters since the 1980s.

The union also expressed concerns over a Queensland government audit showing mining companies had not accurately reported workplace accidents.

According to the CFMEU, there was a discrepancy between the real number of people hurt in the industry and the recorded statistics. It further warned that complacencies can lead to tragedy.
