Workers compensation fraud jailed

A MAN has been jailed for three months after he provided false information to WorkSafe Victoria and fraudulently obtained more than $7600 in workers compensation payments.
In 2000, Luke Voskresensky injured his lower back while working as a labourer with a meat packing company. His workers compensation claim was accepted. The claim required travel to a chemist to collect his medication, so the Birregurra man claimed travel expenses.
The authority found he had claimed for travel expenses on days which he did not attend the chemist. He also claimed for travel expenses when he was in jail. 82 fraudulent invoices were reimbursed by WorkSafe.
Voskresensky pleaded guilty to one count of fraudulently obtaining payments and one count of providing false information under the Accident Compensation Act 1985. He was convicted, and was ordered to repay $7621, in addition to serving three months in jail.
WorkSafe said the convicted man tried to take advantage of a system which supports injured workers. It will continue to identify and prosecute those who try to defraud the system.
