Workplace fatalities drop

ACCORDING to a report from the Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council, more than 230 compensation cases for workplace-related fatalities are settled in Australia each year.

The OHS Comparative Performance Monitoring Report for 2005 to 2006 indicated the national total of cases fell from 316 to 231 over four years.

More than 114,000 workplace inspections were carried out during the one-year period, with 900 prosecutions and $23 million in fines. Compensation schemes paid out more than $5.7 billion, with half going directly to injured workers.

The Workplace Relations Minister said the results were positive, but more needed to be done.
