A MAN has been killed in an industrial accident at BHP’s Yandi iron ore mine, shutting down the Pilbara facility.
The 29-year-old Mandurah man was killed in a workshop accident around midnight on 25 August 2008.
This incident is the second fatality on a BHP Billiton site in the Pilbara in August 2008.
According to the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union, the increased production from Pilbara mines puts greater responsibilities on the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection to enforce safety standards.
The union claims employers will always put production requirements ahead of safety.
The investigation authorities say the incident will have a huge impact for the local community. BHP Billiton says the mine will stay closed pending an investigation and a counselling service will be provided to staff.
In the 2007 financial year, 11 employees with BHP were killed at various sites around the world. The company’s Chief Executive Marius Kloppers had expressed disappointment and said safety in the company needed to improve.
