Young worker burned by hot oil from fryer

Hot oil was splashed over the employee and the floor.A YOUNG employee has been burned after an unsecured fryer slipped off the bench he was cleaning, splashing him with hot oil.

WorkSafe WA detailed the incident in a safety alert. Although the worker had not been actively cleaning the fryer, he wiped the outside of the unit as part of his task of wiping down the bench.

Due to a build up of an oil film, the unsecured fryer moved and fell. Hot oil was splashed over the employee and the floor.

The employee then slipped and fell into the oil on the floor, resulting in further burn injuries.

Cardboard had been placed under the fryer in an attempt to stop it moving but it  had become soaked in oil.

The safety alert urged employers to ensure fryers and similar equipment are attached or secured to the bench, and ensure all employees are trained in the correct cleaning procedures, including the rule of not cleaning equipment while it is hot.
