Zinc smelter fire

A fire at the Nyrstar zinc smelter in Hobart on 9 February 2008 caused about $15,000 worth of damage, with quick response preventing a potential explosion.
According to the Tasmania Fire Service, a mechanical failure sparked a fire in a bin of zinc dust just before 10 o’clock in the morning.
The situation was contained by onsite staff and the fire service, who were said to be well-versed in dealing with the potential hazards of dust explosions and industrial sites.
According to the fire service, this highlighted the importance of having hazard procedures in place.
