Code of conduct for Victorian truck drivers

Code of conduct for Victorian truck drivers

THE Victorian branch of the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) has set up self-regulatory codes of conduct for truck drivers to encourage them to avoid drugs, drive safely and raise fatigue awareness.

According to the TWU, the codes were formulated over 12 months and were issued on 11 March 2008 in partnership with the Victorian Transport Association.

400 occupational health and safety representatives and 600 delegates from the union would police the guidelines.

According to the union, this signalled a strong commitment by drivers and companies to a responsible approach by the industry. While admitting truck drivers sometimes breach the law, the union insists there is a vast law-abiding majority who are being unfairly condemned.

The codes of conduct include commitments by drivers not to tailgate, to travel in left lanes unless overtaking, not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, to observe fatigue regulations and to observe speed limits and seat belt laws. Add your comments
