SA construction workers rally against safety fears and delays

THE SOUTH Australian state government says it is hoping modifications to its workplace safety laws will be introduced to parliament by the end of 2008.

Its statement came after the Construction Union accused the government of taking too long to fulfil its promise to change the laws so occupational health and safety representatives could have easier access to worksites.

Around a hundred construction workers rallied in Adelaide on 3 September 2008 after two incidents at sites managed by Kyren. In early August, a crane cage fell 12 floors, while a steel beam fell over at a construction site on 29 August 2008. Those incidents are being investigated by SafeWork SA.

The union says the entire industry is rife with safety problems. It claims the schedules are unrealistic and laws and site inspectors need to be stricter on site operators.

According to the Industrial Relations minister, the legislative changes will not go ahead until he has finished consulting with all stakeholders.
