WORKCOVER NSW has reminded operators of earthmoving equipment to follow adequate safety precautions when working near excavation sites, after a labourer was hurt by a skid steer excavator. The worker was seriously injured when the excavator operated by a workmate rolled over into a trench where he was working.Continuing investigations suggest the close proximity of the equipment to the excavation site caused the soil under the machine to collapse. The safety authority urged the construction industry to ensure adequate measures are taken to prevent the collapse of an excavation due to the use of mobile plant nearby. Thorough risk assessment, supervision and control measures need to be implemented.High risk is involved when the excavation is more than 1.5m deep. WorkCover said workers should avoid working in an area immediately next to an excavation if possible. When operating earthmoving equipment, a competent person should assess the stability of the excavation regularly, taking into consideration the activities around the excavation and the type and weight of the mobile plant. Suitable shoring, benching or battering could also be constructed to prevent collapses.
