Six-year-old’s safety solution a points the way
WORKSAFE Victoria says it has received the youngest-ever entry to its WorkSafe Awards, claiming if a six-year-old can improve safety, so can industry professionals.
Christian Pouw of Leongatha’s St Laurence’s Primary School had found the school stairways were dangerous, because of children being bumped and jostled while negotiating their way up and down.
He wrote to the school principal Robyn Halliwell with the idea to put arrows on each of the sides of the stairs to segregate the traffic going up and down.
The principal agreed, and he was put in charge of a group of students who made stencils of arrows and marked the right way to go.
According to the work safety authority, the six-year-old applied a simple but effective risk management strategy, setting an example for adult employers, managers and workers.
He identified a safety issue, came up with a solution, got the support of management to push things along, and then worked collaboratively to make the site safer.
