WORKSAFE Victoria has released a guide regarding the use and handling of hazardous substances.

According to the authority, a quarter of all Victorian employees regularly used hazardous substances such as chemicals, flammable liquids and gases in their work.

It warns the unsafe use and handling of such substances can cause cancer, skin disease, poisoning and respiratory illness.

The first section of the guide aims to explain the nature of hazardous substances, their effects on personal health, and risk levels. The second section explains the law associated with hazardous substances and provides information for employers, self-employed persons, employees, manufacturers and suppliers.

The final section explains how stakeholders can ensure a safe workplace by complying with and enforcing the associated legislation. It details the four steps to be taken in consultation, finding, fixing and reviewing.
