THE ACT Government says it will introduce the Construction Induction card and licensing for persons conducting high risk work.
This move will see the ACT participate in two nationally agreed safety processes for the construction industry.
From 1 October 2009, workers must possess a Construction Induction card to work on a construction site in the Act, in accordance with the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work.
This will be harmonised across Australia by the end of 2009. Once issued by any jurisdiction, cards will be recognised in all other jurisdictions.
The ACT is also adopting the National Standard for Persons Performing High Risk Work from 1 October 2009.
Under this new standard, certificates of competency will be replaced by licenses. Unlike the life-time validity of certificates, licenses will be valid for 5 years only, and will need to be renewed.
All training and assessment associated with the licenses must be done through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The licenses will be nationally recognised.
