Queensland rescue team wins international competition

THE MORANBAH North mine rescue team from the Dysart Rescue Station in the Bowen Basin has won an international rescue competition held in Nevada.

According to Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson, the team had been trained by the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS). It faced off coal mine teams from around the world, including China, Peru, Ukraine, Poland, Canada and 32 teams from the United States.

The Minister says the win was not a surprise, because the QMRS has been involved in safety and training for more than 99 years, and have an international reputation for world’s best practice.

The Service also has good equipment, such as two jet engine-powered machines which use jet exhaust gases to put out underground coal fires. In 2003, it used the jet units to put out a mine fire in Virginia.

The QMRS is an independent rescue service funded by an industry levy, and manages a team of 338 volunteer rescue personnel in the state.
