FEDERAL Resources Minister Martin Ferguson says the oil and gas sector needs to do more to ensure the safety of its workers.

In a speech to the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) conference in Darwin on 1 June 2009, Ferguson called for improved leadership, better management of ageing facilities and "no-blame, independent safety investigations".

The minister also urged the industry to address its skills shortages, and to minimise gas releases.

According to Ferguson, the reasonable safety record of the industry has been overshadowed by major events such as the Varanus Island gas explosion, and the death of a worker on Karratha Spirit in December 2008.
