SIEMENS Industrial Automation has released a modular safety system which is said to provide cost savings and expandability.
The Sirius 3RK3 is positioned between a simple safety relay and a fail-safe controller. It is designed for applications in which several safety functions have to be evaluated, but where it would be too expensive to wire together several switching devices.
Users replace devices necessary for the application, and can add more functions to the unit if the application changes.
The 3RK3 safety system has a core of eight safety-related inputs, one relay output, and one solid state output. According to the company, further flexibility is provided with users able to connect up to seven expansion modules which can read in and output other safety functions.
The system also includes parameterisation software and an interface module for communication with higher level controllers. Input and output signals are set, and device functions are interconnected through the software.
